Palmira, February 20th/2009

Dear Sirs. EL ESPECTADOR
Bogotá D.C

I am writing to you, because I am worried about the problems that the sugar cane cultivations is causing to Palmira.  It is true that the sugar cane has grown the Valle del Cauca economy.  In addition a big part of the employments are thanks to the sugar refinery because of the jobs it has increased to the region. However, it brings many problems too. For example, part of the water that the refinery uses to water the cane arrives to the rivers and lakes. This water is full of fertilizers and it causes damages to the organisms that drink this water, such as cancer. And finally these problems affect us in many different ways. For example if a cow drinks contaminated water, its meat will be contaminated also. Then when we eat the cow's meat we could get sick too.

Another problem is the burning of sugar cane when is time of harvest. It contributes to the global warning. This also affects us in other ways. For instance people who live near of the fields of could develop many health problems such as respiratory an eye infections.

I recommend doing something about this. For example the community must unite and protest to the authorities, so they can make laws for the sugar cultivations that will help us with the problems.

Yours Sincerely

CAMILA ANDREA DELGADILLO CAMARGO.
